For the past three summers, The Mountain School has provided the children of the Wood River Valley a truly unique day camp experience. Our successful program provides the children a first-hand experience to our school’s amazing farm, animals, gardens and outdoor spaces. Along with the outdoor aspect, The Mountain School also provides a beautiful balance by intertwining arts, crafts & song.
Along with the Art & Farm program, we also provide some specialty camps that include our Wilderness camp for children 9-12 years of age which provides a hands-on approach to survival skills and techniques. This summer we are very excited to extend this specialty camp to our younger campers ages 7 & 8. We have also offered a parade camp where our campers design and make their own costumes and then participate in the Hailey 4th of July parade. This camp will camp will also be offered in 2010.
Throughout the entire summer our Farming and Permaculture programs introduce the students to simple, ethical, and balanced energy-efficient living through work with gardens, greenhouses, animals. This practical magic includes working directly with the schools resident farm animals which include chickens, ducks, goats, sheep, rabbits, cows, and miniature horses. The Arts program includes music, drum talk, games, painting, sculpture, drama games, movement, poetry, drawing and handwork. Crafts from our goat’s hair and using wool from carding to craft weaves the full cycle of our interdependence with our farm animals.
Wilderness skills are a component of all weeks with exploring, archery and learning amongst the abundant vegetable and flower gardens. Come play with us on our trails, small creeks and nearby river environment. The indoor environment at the school is as enchanting as the outdoor environment with its indoor greenhouse and art room, kitchen for cooking the bounty from the farm and garden, hand-made and natural fiber toys and crafting materials, and a cozy story corner.
The Mountain School’s Summer Camp program has been truly a success in introducing the school, our idyllic campus and the philosophy of a Waldorf-based education into the community as it provides an environment that sets the foundation for a life-long love of learning and holistic balanced living.
